B.Mus. (Hons) D.P.S. (Mus. Perf.) L.R.S.M. (Mus. Perf.)

Karl has been teaching for 23 years and has held positions as teacher of piano, cello and music theory at Pates Grammar School, Hydesville Tower School, Catmose College and the Midlands Arts Centre. He enjoys a varied career, combining teaching, performance and composition.


Born in Leicester, Karl began playing the piano and cello from an early age. He went on to study at the Birmingham Conservatoire, graduating with a Bachelor of Music degree with honours. He was awarded the Dennis Matthews Scholarship and the Young Cygnets Trust Scholarship to continue studying for a Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Studies.

Karl has performed as soloist and with ensembles throughout the UK and abroad on concert tours of USA, Austria, Russia, Italy, Spain, Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Finland, Norway and Sweden, and he has played concerti under conductors such as Edwin Roxburgh, Peter Donohoe and Lyndon Hilling. Prizes and competition successes include first prize in the Birmingham and Midlands Institute Piano Prize, the Derek Young Memorial Award, the Sylvia Cleaver Chamber Music Award, the Dudley Millennium Piano Competition Regional Award, the Chandos Young Musician Accompanists Prize and the Rivendell Trust Accompanists Prize.

Karl was resident pianist at the Hyatt Regency Birmingham for four years and has played as classical musician for cruise lines, including Fred Olsen and Saga.

In 2006 he was awarded a Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music in piano performance.
